Who we are

WakaBuddy is operated by Dhreylabs Consulting Limited, registered in Nigeria at 7 Gbolahan Shodipo Street, Millennium Estate, Gbagada, Lagos 100234, Nigeria. We are the data controller for the information described below, and you can reach us at privacy@wakabuddy.xyz.

The short version

WakaBuddy records the steps and activity you choose to share so you can compare them with friends. We don't sell your data, we don't use it for advertising, and you can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app at any time.

What we collect

Account details. Your email address, and the name and profile picture from the provider you sign in with (Google or Apple). If you sign in with an email code, we store your email address only. You can also set a username.

Activity data. Daily steps, distance, active minutes, floors climbed, an estimated calorie figure, and any water you log. This is stored per calendar day and is what powers leaderboards, streaks and challenges.

Social activity. Your friendships, the groups and challenges you join, and the messages and reactions you send in WakaBuddy chats.

Preferences. Your step and water goals, distance unit, theme, reminder settings, and — only if you enter it — your body weight and height. Weight is used to estimate calories for you; the two together let your coach answer questions that need them. Both are optional, neither is required to use the app, and neither is ever shown to anyone else.

Coach conversations. If you use the AI coach, the messages you send it and its replies are stored against your account so the conversation is still there next time you open it. See below.

Technical data. A push notification token for each device you enable notifications on, and the identifiers of any fitness services (such as Fitbit or Whoop) you connect.

Health data stays on your phone unless it's a step count

WakaBuddy reads from Apple Health on iOS and Health Connect on Android, with your permission. Two things are read purely for display on your own device and are never transmitted to our servers or shown to anyone else: resting heart rate and sleep.

What does leave your device is the activity data listed above — steps, distance, active minutes, floors, calories — because comparing those with friends is the point of the app.

On Android, if you turn on step tracking, WakaBuddy counts steps using a service that keeps running while the app is closed, and sends your daily total to our servers periodically so your leaderboard is not stale. You can stop this at any time from the sync screen in Settings, and the ongoing notification Android shows is how you can tell it is running.

Health and fitness data is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with data brokers. We do not use it for any purpose beyond providing the features you can see in the app.

Your AI coach

The coach is powered by a language model run by Anthropic. When you send it a message, we send Anthropic that message, the recent conversation, and a short summary of your activity — your step and water goals, your averages, which days of the week you walk most and least, your recent daily step counts, any challenge you are in, and your weight and height if you have entered them.

We do not send your name to Anthropic beyond what appears in that summary, and we never send your email address, your messages to other people, or your friends' data. Anthropic processes this to generate a reply and does not use it to train their models.

Your coach conversations are stored with your account and deleted along with everything else when you delete it. If you would rather nothing was sent at all, simply don't use the coach — every other part of WakaBuddy works without it.

The coach is software, not a clinician. It can be wrong, it is not medical advice, and it is built to decline anything clinical and point you to a professional.

Who else sees it

Other people in the app. Friends, group members and challenge participants can see your name, username, profile picture and step totals for the periods being compared. They cannot see your weight, your water log, your heart rate or your sleep.

Service providers. We use a small number of companies to run the service: Vercel (application hosting), Neon (database hosting), Expo and Firebase Cloud Messaging (push notification delivery), Resend (sign-in emails), and Anthropic (the AI coach, described above). They process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.

Deleting your account

Open Settings in the app and tap Delete account. This permanently removes your profile, activity history, water log, challenge and group memberships, friendships, messages and push tokens.

Deletion is immediate and irreversible — we cannot restore an account afterwards. If you can't access the app, email us at privacy@wakabuddy.xyz and we'll delete it for you.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You can exercise most of these directly in the app; for anything else, email privacy@wakabuddy.xyz.

Keeping data

We keep your data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account it is removed from our live database immediately; residual copies may persist in encrypted backups for a short period before those expire.

Children

WakaBuddy isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we'll update the date at the top of this page and notify you in the app.
